The Missed Promise of SOA

Despite massive vendor hype and bandwagon-jumping over the past five years, service-oriented architecture (SOA) has largely been a failure. The majority of IT organizations we surveyed remain unimpressed by and uninterested in SOA, if not just confused by it. Deployments have been relatively few and far between, and limited in scope. There’s little evidence that those organizations that have deployed SOA really want to go much further than where they’ve gone to date, as many of those organizations that identify themselves as having deployed SOA show little interest in expanding those deployments.

This report is intended to shine some light onto what we feel is an overhyped and confusing technology concept, and to learn more about how end-user organizations are embracing SOA, as well as how they’re defining and implementing it. We also look ahead to emerging technologies like virtualization and cloud computing that could enable SOA to work better and ultimately increase SOA adoption.
